Manchester United face arch rivals Liverpool on Sunday afternoon in the standout fixture of this weekend’s Premier League fixtures.
But Hundreds of Manchester United supporters stormed the pitch at Old Trafford ahead of their game against Liverpool in protest at the club’s American owners, the Glazer family.
There were clashes as fans tried to break police lines outside, with officers drawing batons to keep the crowds back and bottles and other projectiles thrown. A line of riot police, backed by horses, pushed the crowds back from the area where the players will enter the stadium.
Just after what should have been the scheduled kick-off time, police succeeded in pushing back the crowds and clearing the Old Trafford forecourt.
‘The players minds are not that focused, can they try and come back tomorrow?’ Neville said. ‘Their food has gone, their mood has gone. I wonder if playing tomorrow afternoon, if that could happen.’
Carragher added: ‘It’s that pattern and if they are in the right frame of mind to play a game. We are in that stage of the season where there is not that much time to fit it in unless it is tomorrow.
‘There has to come a point where you think of the players, this is a huge game for Liverpool in terms of the top four. Will Jurgen Klopp be happy with that, players waiting around in a hotel room?’
A stadium announcement later declared that the Old Trafford stadium is now secure, but still no update on when the game is going to be played
Eyes are on the Premier League for an update on when the game could be kicked off later today. The Premier League’s website says at present: After the security breach at Old Trafford we can confirm the Manchester United v Liverpool match will not kick off at 16:30 BST.
“The safety of everyone at Old Trafford is paramount.
‘At present there is no revised kick-off time. We will update accordingly.’
Police have managed to usher fans away from Old Trafford but there, at present, is still no sign of a revised kick-off time that teams and players are working towards. The match was scheduled to have started.
However reports reaching Ovasports confirms match has now being postponed.
