Florentino Perez, says Cristiano Ronaldo is the ‘greatest Galacticos’ he ever signed, the Real Madrid president spoke on Spanish radio on Monday about the past year and the difficulties the club has gone through since Cristiano Ronaldo departed.
Haven being in charge for two spells at the Santiago Bernabeu, an enigmatic president has become well known for his pursuit of world-class players.
Great footballers like Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane, David Beckham, Kaka and two Ronaldos are some of the major names to have been acquired in big-money deals.
All players has enjoyed success in the Spanish capital in their own way, but one man is considered to have stood head and shoulders above the rest.
The Portugal international Ronaldo was sign from Manchester United in 2009 for a record breaking fee and he went on to spend nine stunning years in Madrid.
The 34-year-old departed for Juventus in the summer of 2018, but left having scored 450 goals in 438 appearances and collected four Champions League crowns, two La Liga titles, three Club World Cup triumphs and four more Ballons d’Or for his personal collection.
“I think he already had it quite clear that he wanted new challenges,” Perez said on ‘El Transistor’ on Onda Cero when asked about the timing of the exit and the fact the forward hinted at an exit immediately after the Champions League victory in Kiev.
“He used that moment to say it, but I think he’d been thinking about it for some time.
“He never created any problems during the nine years at Real Madrid, never once arriving late or anything.
“I think he’s the best player I signed for Real Madrid
“I always had a great relationship with him.
“We never had any problems, not even over money.
The Blancos supremo also denied that Real Madrid’s refusal to help the player pay debts to the tax authorities contributed to his departure.
“We never talked about his [tax] debt.”
The president was asked if he’d spoken with Ronaldo since his move to Juventus.
“I don’t speak about those private matters,” he replied.
